Thanks guys,
I did re-install - seems to be working very nicely. Outperforms
similar hardware running i386 for a CPU-bound maths problem.
One niggle: I filled the 80Gb disk with LVM partitions on i386. The
x86_64 installer claimed is was 100.001% full (or something like) and
would not let me use it. Is that because 32 bits does not handle 80Gb?
