The disk is several years old and served me well ... no warranty anymore
though.
Saving data before it gets worse is good suggestion.

Rolf, I'm in full agreement with everyone that the drive does sound like
it's going bad, but if you want to make sure, download the ultimate boot
cd from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. It has all the drive diagnostics
programs you could ever want. Under system utilities, you can use AIDA16
to check what manufacturer your hard drive is.
Needed to chime that in, the ultimate boot CD is (being a technician)
the best CD since the invention of the Data CD (IMNSHO)
