Are you sure one card wasnt a 3c905(a,b,c) ?
Perhaps you were connecting to a cisco (or similar) switch that takes
way to long to autonegotiate, leaving the card/switch port in 10/half mode ?
I swapped the network card for a newer 3x59x and it works now.

And if you swap back ?
What about the dos configure tool, maybe the card has different settings ?
