That'd depend on what other ports are available.

On one of my my motherboards (an ABit BE6), there's four IDE ports.  The
first two are 33 MHz UDMA, the last two are 66 MHz UDMA.  So the slower
ones got used for things like optical drives, the last two for hard
drives.  So, my first hard drive is /dev/hde.

For other boards, with SCSI, SATA, etc., they may be in the same
position (that their hard drive isn't using the first port in the list).
