The actual issue for me was that there was an undefined symbol in livna's ffmpeg RPM which xine relies upon to perform the decoding. This resulted in xine either hanging, or being unable to play anything at all (and spewing a cryptic error). I ended up ripping out livna's ffmpeg, and installing the one from freshrpms instead, which completely fixed the problem.
