3D acceleration on Intel 915 gfx chip (Sony Vaio)

I'm struggling to find out whether the default (i810) xorg driver should be capable of doing decent 3D with my Centrino-based 915 driver (on a Sony Vaio).

The last Intel-shipped driver code is dated 2004, and doesn't compile; all the pointers indicate that the laest xorg drivers are the best, but glxgears and beryl are right CPU hogs.

Anyone any ideas? Am I missing a bit of xorg.conf magic?
