I get similar errors when I run those commands as a regular user ...
try running them as root user.
More specifically, once you get alsamixer running, use Tab to get to
your capture devices, left/right arrows to get to the one you want to
enable/disable and space bar to toggle it on and off and up/down to
set the capture levels.
You might have to experiment a bit. Some cards have a Master Capture
that controls all the master gain that needs to be enabled and then
you enable the specific sources after that. Not sure if your card
needs this or will handle multiple capture sources so you are best to
just enable the one you need or that one and the master and see how
that goes.

The commands were run as root. I ended up tossing in an old sound card
that I had laying around, for my purposes it is more than adequate and
seems to work fine.
