You can download the 8mb 6/i386/os/images/boot.iso and burn that to a
credit-card-sized CD, boot from that, and do an entirely network-based
install, which downloads only the packages you select -- by far the most
bandwidth-effective choice for a single install.

Yes, this is what people do with kickstart.


I will give it a whirl. I've been unlucky with kickstart in the past,
but I was probably not doing it right myself. To google I go...
