You should be using smartmontools for routine monitoring. badblocks is for
burn in or extensive testing after a partial failure (as opposed to just
tossing the drive).

I think the -s option helps with this.

You might need a more recent version of smartmontools than what currently
comes with Fedora to handle sata disks.
