My laptop (Gateway MX6421) sometimes has issues being out of range even in text mode.  I switch to X and back to the first terminal (CTL-ALT-F1) a couple of times and it usually fixes it.  An yes, it is an ATI.

Cheers,

Is it an ATI video card? Various people have reported mysterious
signal problems with some ATI cards (me included). I made my problems
disappear by forcing X to use a lower refresh rate (which is not
easy - for the complete tale of the quest for lower refresh
rates read: http://home.att.net/~Tom.Horsley/easy-linux.html :-).
