this is tacky but it will work...

first make sure you install devel libraries...

yum install mysql-devel mysql-administrator

then because the gem wants to use /usr/local/lib...

mv /usr/local/lib /usr/local/lib-orig
ln -s /usr/lib /usr/local/lib

then
gem install mysql (I found 2.6 installed)

then 
rm /usr/local/lib # remove the symbolic link we created earlier
then 
mv /usr/local/lib-orig /usr/local/lib # put things back...

and you should be good to go...but make sure you change /etc/my.cnf and
restart mysqld service as I instructed in earlier e-mail
