Unix is a trademark assigned to specific products meeting a specific set of guidelines and tests. In todays world it's a bit like being certified "100% brontosaurus compatible" - so nobody cares. Secondly its not "reverse engineered". Thats the process of analysing code to see how things work. Unix is based on published standards, books and tradition which is well documented.
