It may be that your RPM database was (already) corrupt when you started the
upgrade. You can check the state of the RPM database with "rpm
--verifydb". If it is corrupt, but the Packages file doesn't have
problems, as root do "rpm --rebuilddb".
Personally, I installer-upgraded from FC3 to FC5 and FC5 to FC6, with no
special difficulty (other than the RPM database corruption issue). I have
two partitions, one with the current OS and the other with the old, or
during upgrade, new OS, so I can try several times if needed. I also make
a backup first.
