I am not sure when things changed but you can set all of the settings by running the command:

$ xscreensaver-demo

Ignore (cancel) a warning it gives about not running the screen saver on display 0:0

Integration between the xscreensavers and the kde screensavers does not appear to be complete. This command lets you configure the xscreensavers directly.

You can specify you're own folder by adding a line
imageDirectory: <path/to/folder>

at the end of ~/.xscreensaver

Is this new for FC6? Because it doesn't work for me on FC5 (gnome-screensaver-2.14.3-3.fc5). It seems to be hardwired to use ~/Pictures and nothing else.
