Hi

How does gnome know to open certain applications depending on a file type. There must be something somewhere where gnome reads about which applications are associated with which file types (extensions) .... I know its there some where .... but where?

Read all about it here:

http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/2.14/mimetypes-0.html

This file holds the default mime types and associated extensions:

/usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml
