I ended up doing this same thing on a Pent III w/ 128MB RAM - less than
recommended memory ;-)

I believe that Debian picked it up (anaconda)

during install process - you can always check the virtual consoles (3 &
4)

<control><alt><F3> or <control><alt><F4> since errors are generally
reported there
