I have a USB-based HP printer (HP PSC 2355) that worked fine under FC5,
but refuses to print under FC6.
The system-config-printer tool auto-configured this as:
Description: Added by HAL
Location:
Device URI: hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_3f0_4911_HU4AFBR2HZKJ_if1_printer_HU4AFBR2HZKJ
make and model: HP PSC 2350 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
But doing a simple 'lpr /etc/rpc' from the command gives, in
/var/log/cups/error_log,
E [31/Oct/2006:22:42:33 +0000] [Job 7] Unable to open HAL device "hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_3f0_4911_HU4AFBR2HZKJ_if1_printer_HU4AFBR2HZKJ"
E [31/Oct/2006:22:42:33 +0000] PID 4183 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/hal) stopped with status 1!
Any ideas?
By far, I don't know much about the printer setup. You might try running
a program that I was just introduced to called hp-info. It should output
some useful information.
About your printer, I just searched for what more the USB printer was.
It seems that google led me to information that you have an all-in-one
printer type. I also have an HP PSC printer of model 1209. I can print
successfully with it in FC5 and still can in FC6. I also can print in
development version.
Anyway, you need special HP specific programs installed on your computer.
hplip, libsane-hpaio and maybe hpijs installed.
I don't recall setting up anything for the printers. I may have back on
FC5 but don't remember for sure. For development that was a recent
installation, I did nothing to configure the printer. As far as I know,
with the additional programs, it should just work.
Sorry I don't know a lot about printer specifics. I hope this gives you
some ideas as to what to check.
