It is meant to be a pipe as well. The man pages are in troff format and for
some reason they used the │ to represent |.
You can prove that to yourself by going to the man page and try using │ with
the definitions given. You'll find it won't work....but | will.
As to what it is you'll find it is a character with value 0xE2 in hex.
There are various ways of entering such characters in various OSs.
