Agreed. I always focus first on hardware problems when faced with boot or networking problems. It isn't inconceivable that you have an unfortunate coincidence between your upgrade and a hardware problem. Just grab a live CD from another distro., Ubuntu, Knoppix, whatever, and verify your hardware integrity.

I don't know any reason why you shouldn't use yum to upgrade everything,
and you might be lucky and such an upgrade fixes your problem. Otherwise,
you need to work out what the cause of the panic is, as others suggest.
