As far as I know Open Type fonts are not supported by OpenOffice at the
moment.

Open type fonts can be converted, see
<http://www.se.eecs.uni-kassel.de/~thm/OpenOffice.org/bugs.html>.

But this does not seem to work for any font. I had problems with ITC
Officina. The conversion worked but the fonts were not displayed in
OpenOffice. It seems that OpenOffice really needs a better font handling.
