But I need to admit something. My opposition to using printconf is from using it on FC3 and FC4. It is possible that the creators of printconf are aware of its previous deficiencies and have corrected them I admit I don't try to repeat previous mistakes with each new version to see if the problems remain. But the sensible thing is that if you are using CUPS to do printing one should use the CUPS interface and CUPS commands to manage the printers.
