Logging into an FC-5 machine via PuTTY (2.6.17-1.2174_FC5 #1 Tue Aug 8

I run the 'pstree' command and get back:

# pstree
initââ¬âacpid
    ââatd

It is the LANG setting. A "quick and dirty" fix would be to run
"export LANG=en_US". This will only help until you log out. You can
also play with the font encoding in PuTTY. Try changing the Window
--> Translation setting. Checking the "Override with UTF-8 ..." box
or setting the UTF-8 character encoding may do the trick.

Thanks everyone.  Flipping the indicated switch on PuTTY works great.  (Window|Translation|Received data assumed to be in which character set:|"UTF-8")
