OK, for me a partial solution is to open up the Java and JavaScript section of 
the Konqueror configuration, and give the full path for  the "java" 
executable ( i.e. change java to /usr/bin/java). java is in my path, so I 
don't see why this should be needed, but if I do this

http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/ArcTest/example1.html

works fine.

Unfortunately, its not a complete solution as the original page I wanted to 
see

http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/condor/view/UserMonth.html

did not work the first time I visited it. It caused the java executable to go 
into 100% cpu. Strangly though, after going to the java.sun.com link first, 
it now works fine...
