I must put my 2 cents in here. I used to reply to these mails asking

about a "programming environment" for linux/unix/whatever with the phrase: "Unix IS an IDE".

The typical 'ix system is very good on the D and E part. But then, even
Alcatraz was an "environment" so the E part is a given. The I part of
IDE, Integrated, is in my experience a "DIY" project without something
like KDevelop or Eclipse added to the bare 'ix.
