Re: strange and serious problem about user login

Hi,
Thanks very much for your help, it seems that it works as you
suggested--now I could login as normal user without errors. And one
service I could start--just chmod +r /etc/. -R. now i am fighting with
ssh server. ;-(

This happened when I are curious to make rpm package, now is there a
way to recover the mess-up permissions from last stupid change?

Thanks a lot,

Zhou Zhen

let me rephrase my question:

what are the permissions on the /etc/ directory? i.e., at / issue the
command:

   ls -ld etc

the /etc/ directory should be read+execute group+other (as well as
owner, of course).

most (but not all) directories under /etc/ should have those same
permissions and most files should be read group+other.

from what you indicated in your last response, it would appear that the
permissions on things *in* your /etc/ directory don't have the correct
permissions. if something happened to reset the permissions under
/etc/, then there's probably a reasonable chance that things are messed
up in other directories too.
