Ok, but mc is *very* CLI. :-)
It will work perfectly in putty. (set putty in UTF-8 charset mode
if you see strange characters on the screen)

Another approach would be to run Xvnc on the server and a VNC client
on your MS box.

Easy to configure on the MS machine: you just install a VNC
viewer; not too difficult on the server (/etc/sysconfig/vncservers
and other details).

The pro: you can turn off and on the MS machine and you find your
Linux desktop in the conditions you left it last time.

The con: it can be a little slow, but if you have 100Mbit/s ethernet
you will not notice that too much; if you have gigabit you will not
notice at all...

I suppose you're not too interested in high security, as it is
your home LAN.
