Try an higher value or comment out all your copies of HorizSync and VertRefresh lines to force the autodetection. If you have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, you will find what's happening to the 1024x768 modes; they're probably all discarded because of out of range problems for sync frequencies. NOTE: driving the monitor with a too high horizsync could damage the monitor, but I think that actually this only applies to monitors built more than ten years ago.
