My mistake. The problem isn't with the ipv6. I just disabled it.
I am now wondering if it could be the transparent proxy issue that
has also been discussed in the java mailing lists. I should have
mentioned that I am in a private ip address space using an address
which isn't mapped to an external ip address. I see the problem
on other machines which happen to have an external ip address
mapped to their private ip address (using the same domainname
internally and externally).
