Looks like I have gotten things working well with acroread, if youdon't mind

I would change the default to evince? Might want to try it out in thenear
future.
go to edit -> preferences -> downloads -> view and edit actions
note that there is no plugin for evince so it will open as a separate window,
but way faster -- almost instantaneous after d/l.
