I seem to have prevailed. Actually, I must give credit where it's due - the
final clean-up was carried out by PUP. I'd been using Yumex, but had the
problem described just above. PUP installed the kernel and other packages,
and as bonus, finally updated BIND, which had been in dependency limbo for
about 2-3 weeks. Yumex would detect a new Bind but always fail on install for
dependencies. PUP is not my favorite package tool, but I must say that this
is the second time it's resolved a problem like this. In any event, all seems
to be well, now, and as far as I can tell, all packages are working...

This afternoon, I had tried PUP, and it found a bunch of packages needing
updating (this was much earlier in the repair process), and it went into a
never-ending download - it hung for 2-3 hours in the download process; no
error messages, and occasional indications of progress - I finally cancelled
out. Yumex was able to carry out the same updates, with the above mentioned
issues, successfully. Then, using PUP again, I was able to get the remaining
packages updated. I'm not quite sure how to document all this, or where I'd
start with bugzilla so I probably won't. Hope some of this is useful to
someone.
