I don't know about SCIM, but pressing my Compose key (set to Menu in System
-> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Layout Options -> Compose Key position) and
then a suitable stand-in for the desired accent sometimes sets up a dead
key that puts the accent on the next character typed.  For a macron its
Compose-- (Compose-Dash), for a breve its Compose-< (Compose-Less Than).
