What kind of plugins are you trying to get? As of right now there's no
"mega update site" where you can go and browse all of the plugins available
in the world. One plugin that I use that we don't (yet) have a package for
(it's going through the Extras submission process ATM -- see [1]) is
Subclipse. I install it following the instructions here:

HI Andrew,
Thanks for you reply.
The plugins I am trying to get are all J2EE related. Like helping me in
designing hibernate-EJB3 application.
In the meantime I have switched to the Eclipse application from
eclipse.org, because I couldn't get any plugins at all using the Extras
repository.
However, getting the plugins is still a problem: when I do so, the
program gets very far in fetching the plugins, but then it hangs on
obtaining one of them after which my internet connection is gone
(disconnected). I have an always-on ADSL-connection. Also, I can see
that the DSL-connection is still on, just the internet connection is
gone. I have to reconnect and if I repeat the experience a few times,
even reconnecting does not work.
Alas, it might not be the fault of the Extras repository. I am not even
sure it is Eclipse. It might just be my modem: I have no idea where to
start looking.
Anyway, I would welcome plugins through the Extras repository, a lot.
Yes, I agree that the whole update site/manager could use a re-design :) .
