I hope this isn't a stupid question!
Can the history commands in the terminal be cleared? If so, how is it done?

rm ~/.bash_history

You can also prevent the history file from storing any info by adding
the HISTSIZE=0 in your .bash_profile. And export it.

I prefer to leave mine at two or three commands for convenience and the added privacy. I usually have a clear and exit in the history file.
