I had this problem with FC4 updates before and filed it as https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=173215 and also see http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5795 I got around it before by downgrading my xorg packages to the original ones from FC4 (before any updates).
Those 2 bugs sound like something completely different than what I'm experiencing (plus I'm not hitting those bugs at all).
