Can you post the output of
grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
please?
You might be running with a vesa mode graphics driver when you should be
using something like the radeon or ati graphics driver.
Or you might be using the proprietary ATI driver, in whih case you might
want to go to them for support.
