This works.

But whatever happened (or was done deliberately) it is not consistent.
Using the other 'gui' option of shutting down, namely:
'System -> Log Out -> Shutdown' DOES show the kernel shutdown messages.

So I would still like to know if this is a bug or a new 'innovation'.
