The dd command that I sent to you correctly reads the DVD's in the right
chunks, so if you ever do get one you can copy, that's the dd construct
that will do it.

About that dvd media thing; I burned an FC5 DVD image myself using
Maxell dvd+r media and an old Sony DRU-510A. This FC5 dvd tests ok and
has been thru about 5 FC5 installs so far. The brand of burner you have
has a huge impact on end-result quality. The dvd "underground" has been
touting LG as a brand of choice; I can confirm that recommendation cause
I've been installing the LG GSA-41XX models for the last year with
fantastic results in the field.

All else being equal (namely the dvd image), it sounds like you may have
some hardware stuff going on. Or you could have cheap media. If this
has been a problem across a long time and a wide range of media I would
take a long hard look at the machine.
