.m4a is generally AAC encoded audio. It's the extension iTunes uses
for songs ripped in it's default setup. .m4v is used for videos.
I don't know if there is other software using these extensions in
different ways, but I suppose it's possible.

Ok, mates, this is just to say thank you and to confirm
I downloaded xmms-faad2 [yum install xmms-faad2.i386] from the livna repo and now XMMS can play .m4a files that were ripped in iTunes
