n_hdlc modules an 2.6.16 kernel

   Hello all,
My ADSL modem uses the n_hdlc module, which is not compiled
by default on the 2.6.16 kernels, although it used to be.
I can re-enable it by switching on non-standard character devices and
n_hdlc and re-compiling the kernel, but it is a shame not to use the
pre-compiled kernels.
But what I don't understand is that this is a module. Is there some
way I can just compile the module and not the rest of the kernel?
    Thanks,
            Bill
