Media check failures are more often due to read failures than write
failures. The problem lies in the kernel and has gone unfixed for years.
Kernel hacker Alan Cox suggested just getting rid of the mediacheck
altogether.

And the workaround of turning off DMA won't help everyone - it's pure
fluke that it helps anyone at all really.
