I'd suggest you upgrade to the latest -testing kernel and reconnect the
"old" 15K drive. (continue using the 10K Maxtor drive as your root for
now). Try formatting the 15K drive... see if it work.
Oh... Use the Adaptec BIOS utility to format the 15K drive... does it
detect any errors?

BTW, check the SCSI termination on both ends. It might be a termination
problem driving the driver crazy...
