Like I said in the bug report, it's a Perfection 2450 Photo and the 
motherboard is an Intel D865PERL.

I'll ask around and see if I can borrow any other scanners to try out on this 
machine. Somebody I phoned this morning made the valid point that it might 
not be Linux that's causing this problem - it could just as easily be this 
particular scanner that's not talking USB 2 correctly.

The thing I want to ask, Alan, sorry if it seems like a stupid question, but 
are you sure that your motherboard has USB 2.0 interfaces, and that they are 
configured as USB 2.0 not 1.1 in the BIOS. My BIOS lets me switch off USB 2.0 
but it is on by default.
