I want to answer the above questions correctly. I am going to take my
laptop to school today and configure the wireless there. I am a little
vague about what I did at home but I got it to work. Once I try it at
school maybe I can give you more cogent answers. At least I will try.

Right click on the panel. Choose Add to Panel. One of the options will
be to add Network Monitor to the Panel.
