Turns out that I had two problems: 1 -- The cable was partially pulled away from the connector at the back of the combo-floppy drive. (Perhaps loosened by yesterday's earthquake.) 2 -- The 5-1/4 inch floppy drive failed. Weird that I could write to fd0 from SuSE 9.2 today but not from FC4. Before I check the cable kudzu listed the 5-1/4 drive in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf as detached.
