Ok, this did the trick. You have to download and install
vmware-any-any-update98.tar.gz from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/

which then patches the VMWare configuration script to accept my current
kernel and where it has its libs and includes.

And I thought we left those days behind us, when I moved away from
VMWare 4.5.x towards 5.5.x ...

Now, if I could only get the second screen to work again, so I can run
VMWare Windoze in all its glory (that hurt).
