[foo@localhost ~]$ mysql -u root -p
Enter password:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
[foo@localhost ~]$

You should never connect to mysqld logged in as root.

You need to use your MySQL root's password.
