Odd. I've never seen problems with Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] -- and I do use it
from time to time. I've been using Nvidia cards and an ATi Radeon 9250,
both with the open source drivers.
I'm quite prepared to believe that Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] was broken for a time
with some cards. But I think that statement is a little *too* dogmatic.
