sorry to be asking such a dumb question, but are you suggesting i replace this file
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
with this one?
/etc/X11/gdm/factory-gdm.conf
i mean, copy all of its contents and replace them?

Right: but unless you also have a line
DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE
(it might be =KDM, I forget) in /etc/sysconfig/desktop then you are
running the default gdm, not kdm. Please try this advice from earlier:

>>> /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf if that has a later datestamp.
