I found in the end all I needed to do was give the following commands
(I should confess at this point that the machine -
which is a ThinkPad T20 I just acquired -
is running slax , probably because it only has a 6GB disk)

(1) sudo ifconfig eth0 up
(2) sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.3.11

(the address of my home WiFi LAN is 192.168.3.0).

After (1) eth0 was listed by ifconfig ,
but had an ipv6 address.

Thanks for all the help.
