Chances are, you have a broken ACPI implementation on the laptop.
You may be able to get around it by using your own DSDT table. But
you need the correct table for your machine. See

http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/index.php

I am not sure if putting a DSDT in initrd.img is covered there, or
somewhere else, but it is possible. From my /var/log/dmesg:

Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK.
ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initrd... not found.
